‘Tis the season: Flu shots available through November

At Wayne State, daily interaction with many people across campus is unavoidable. Immunizations help protect the campus community by preventing the spread of disease.

This year, the Campus Health Center (CHC) is providing flu shots to all Wayne State University faculty, staff and students at more than 20 flu clinics across campus through November.

“We are very happy to provide the flu vaccine to the entire WSU community this year,” said CHC Chief Nursing Officer Ann Rayford. “We see this as an opportunity to keep all of Wayne State healthy and flu free, and for employees to be an example to students to show the importance of receiving the flu vaccine.”

Getting vaccinated against the flu is in accordance with the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and is for the health and safety of individuals, family members, colleagues and students.

Flu shots are available at no out-of-pocket cost to all faculty and staff enrolled in a WSU-provided health care plan. For those not enrolled, there is a $35 charge for the immunization. The CHC will process credit card payments or accept cash (exact change only) the day of immunization. Check the CHC event calendar for the most up-to-date clinic dates.

The partnership with CHC provides additional opportunities to get the flu vaccine at the more than 20 flu clinics currently scheduled on campus, in addition to the ability to visit the Campus Health Center on Thursdays for a walk-in clinic. Scheduling an appointment at the Campus Health Center also remains an option.

“Although there are some special clinic days and times where an opportunity to make an appointment is offered, we want to ensure everyone knows that there are many additional opportunities to walk in to a flu clinic around campus with no appointment needed,” Rayford said.

The CHC offers some helpful tips for the day of your immunization: Bring one completed copy of the flu outreach consent form (paper copies are available at the clinic as well), bring your health insurance card (if you have one), bring your WSU OneCard, and wear short sleeves or layers that can easily be removed.

As an added bonus, those who get their flu shot can win big this flu season. Take a photo of yourself getting the flu shot or after you received the flu shot, add the hashtag #StopTheFluWSU, and you will be entered to win a $25 gift card. And don’t forget to help Wayne State win the National College Flu Vaccination Challenge by completing this 30-second survey.
