Wayne State University will offer Michigan in-state tuition to residents of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands beginning with the winter 2018 semester. Registration for that semester is underway and continues through Jan. 22, 2018.

The new policy applies to undergraduate and graduate students, but does not include programs in the Law School or School of Medicine. The in-state tuition plan will continue through 2020.The new policy is in addition to Wayne State's Discover Detroit scholarship, which eliminates nonresident charges for undergraduate students from outside of Michigan. 

Provost Keith Whitfield says the policy will help students continue on a degree-seeking path with little interruption to their studies.

“In light of the damage done by hurricanes Irma and Maria, and the devastation to the universities in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, we are eager to offer this opportunity for in-state tuition to students whose studies have been disrupted,” Whitfield says. “The most important thing for these students is to keep them in school so they can complete their degrees. We hope we can help make that a reality by offering Michigan tuition rates to these students.”

Students can apply to Wayne State online at admissions.wayne.edu. The in-state tuition discount will be applied automatically for residents of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
