WHAT:
The Wayne State University School of Medicine Class of 2017 medical students will learn the site of their upcoming residency training at the jubilant annual Match Day ceremony. The event mirrors national Match Day events scheduled on the same day throughout the country, and follows the protocol of the National Resident Matching Program, a private non-profit corporation established in 1952 to provide a uniform date of appointment to positions of graduate medical education in the United States.
Sealed envelopes containing all U.S. medical students’ graduate medical education assignments, including specialty and location of residency, are delivered and opened throughout the country simultaneously. The physicians-in-training will receive their medical degrees in June, and start residencies in July throughout Michigan and the U.S.
WSU’s students have a historically high match success rate, and many remain in Michigan for their residency. In 2016, 95.8 percent of WSU students matched with their preferred residency sites, and 52 percent of those residencies were in Michigan – good news for a state with a projected physician shortage.
