MEDIA ADVISORY: Wayne State hosting 700 school children to promote prevention of childhood obesity

WHAT:

An estimated 700 Metro Detroit schoolchildren will converge onto Wayne State University’s Matthaei Physical Education Center to participate in a worldwide event promoting the prevention of childhood obesity and the importance of regular exercise. The annual event, called “All Children Exercising Simultaneously” (ACES) Day, draws thousands of elementary school students to sites globally for exercise and promotion of physical activity in schools.

WHEN:

9:45 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 4

  • 9:45-10:15 a.m. (Program overview, opening remarks from special guests)
  • 10:15-11 a.m. (Yoga program)

WHERE:

Due to the forecast of rain, Wayne State University’s ACES day event will be held at the indoor gym facilities of Matthaei Physical Education Center, 5101 John C. Lodge, Detroit.

MORE INFO:

WSU’s Center for School Health in the College of Education, and WSU Athletics, are partnering with the Michigan Fitness Foundation and Danialle Karmanos’ Work It Out to co-host the morning event. Joining the third through fifth grade students will be various civic, government, educational and health leaders including:

  • M. Roy Wilson, Wayne State University president
  • Mike Duggan, City of Detroit mayor
  • Debbie Dingell, U.S. Congresswoman
  • Bill Schuette, Michigan attorney general
  • Danialle Karmanos, founder and CEO, Danialle Karmanos’ Work It Out
  • Luanne Ewald, interim CEO of the Children's Hospital of Michigan-DMC
