DETROIT (Feb. 1, 2012) - In cooperation with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Wayne State
University Department of Music is pleased to announce the second season of "Mondays at the Max with
Wayne State," a concert series featuring premier WSU student ensembles at the Max M. Fisher Music
Center. This collaboration with the DSO gives Wayne State music students the opportunity to perform in a
world-class venue to larger audiences.
"I am delighted to work with Wayne State in bringing the best and brightest music students together to
celebrate the city through an innovative musical partnership," said Charles Burke, the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra's director of education and artistic director of civic ensembles.
Jazz Big Band I and II will kick off the series at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13 in the Max M. Fisher Music
Center's Music Box. Wayne State Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies Christopher Collins
will lead the Big Band in a tribute performance to jazz legend Stan Kenton featuring guest artist Jerry
McKenzie. Wayne State's Big Band II will also perform under the direction of Assistant Professor Russell
Miller.
Tickets are available at the DSO box office: $15 for adults, $10 for students, and $5 for WSU students
(with OneCard). Friends of Music and DSO Civic Youth Ensemble Families receive a 50 percent discount.

Feb. 20 • Wind Symphony and Chamber Winds, Douglas Bianchi, conductor • Featuring a
soprano saxophone concerto by Narong Prangcharoen with soloist Jeff Heisler and the premier of
Assistant Prof. Jon Anderson's "Dash," a new work commissioned by the Wayne State Band.
Feb. 27 • University Orchestra Concerto Concert, Kypros Markou, conductor • Featuring
Bernstein's Overture to Candide, Hungarian Dances by Brahms, and winners of the Student
Concerto Competition performing Mozart's Oboe Concerto and Schumann's Cello Concerto.
Mar. 5 • Concert Band and Wind Symphony, Douglas Bianchi, conductor • Featuring a student
soloist performing the Rimsky Korsakov Trombone Concerto and graduate conducting students.
Apr. 16 • University Orchestra, Kypros Markou, conductor • Featuring Rimsky-Korsakov's colorful and ever-popular Scheherazade.
All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Box.
