Michigan fails test for college cost

Michigan is flunking when it comes to affordability in higher education. Approximately 32 percent of an average family's income is needed to pay for each year of college expenses at a four-year public university in Michigan. That is up from 28 percent a decade ago. Michigan is one of the 36 states that failed the affordability test as state funding decreases, have led to steep tuition increases.

Doc film festival coming to WSU

Wayne State University will kick off the Detroit Docs International Film Festival with a gala Nov. 11 at the Welcome Center. This year's festival will screen about 100 films from around the world, some of them screened on campus, others at the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Film Center and the Birmingham 8. The university will also host lectures and workshops on the films, featuring Wayne experts and filmmakers.

Ralph Nader is on the ballot, but not expected to get many Michigan votes. History Chair Marc Kruman, who teaches a course on presidential elections, thinks Nader will play a minor role. "My sense is that the Kerry margin is significant enough that Nader's entry would not be consequential if the election were to be held today," said Kruman.

Archer Foundation expects to raise $100,000 at Sept. 13 event

The Dennis W. Archer Foundation expects to raise at least $100,000 at its 2004 Archer Scholars Scholarship Reception on Sept. 13 to pay for college scholarships for 20 Detroit area students. The scholarships will go to students at Wayne State University and at Western Michigan University.

Kurt Metzger, research director of the Center for Urban Studies, comments about housing costs taking a bigger chunk out of the average paycheck. "A lot of the low-income people who got jobs in the late '90's through welfare-to-work or whatever have been downsized or cut back or lost their jobs," Metzger says. "Even if their rents haven't gone up much, their incomes have gone down."

Lawyers hail admission of mistakes in terror trial

Both newspapers ran an AP story about the Justice Department's announcement that it would not pursue terrorism charges against three Detroit-area defendants who were tried last year on grounds they were part of a terror cell. The government said its prosecutors made errors that deprived the defendants of a fair trial and that it supports their request for a new trial. WSU law professor David Moran said the Justice Department's admission of errors following an internal investigation was surprising and a "very welcome development."
